Position Overview

Yellow Pencil is looking for an experienced web designer to join our creative team. We are looking for someone with good understanding of User Experience, Information Architecture, Web Standards and Accessibility and Mobile & Responsive Design. As we improve our process we are moving away from design in Adobe products and into design within the browser, so a strong background in HTML, CSS and JavaScript will be key for our approach, especially as we enhance our responsive design process. You will have the opportunity to work with thought leaders in the responsive design space, including Ethan Marcotte and our own Steve Fisher. You will have the opportunity to work on e-commerce and application interfaces, in public service delivery and information design and in online branding and marketing. You will play a key role in our design team and collaborate with Search, Content Strategist, Brand and User Experience Specialists to create truly effective and compelling web experiences. You will play a strong resourcing role to our development team helping them to consistently adhere to visual identity and usability best practices.

Your Responsibilities

  • Work with our Discovery team to identify business, visual identity and user requirements.
  • Perform Competitive Audits to review and document best practices in web and interface design.
  • Create visual concepts and storyboards using Adobe Fireworks or compatible tools.
  • Create interface prototypes using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Work with our Development team to review and document technical interface requirements and to map visual interface to content management system requirements.
  • Work with our User Testing and QA team to identify usability or functional problems and then prototype and develop new solutions.

Required Hard Skills

  • 2-5 years experience working on web interface design.
  • 2-5 years experience working with content management systems, either open source or proprietary (and yes, we consider WordPress to be a CMS).
  • Strong Adobe Fireworks competency, with good experience in Photoshop and Illustrator.
  • 2-5 years experience working with HTML and CSS.
  • Experience with mobile or responsive interface design.
  • Experience using Microsoft Word (or equivalent) for documentation and report creation and experience working with Microsoft PowerPoint (or equivalent) for creating presentations.

Required Soft Skills

  • The ability to communicate in writing with clients and co-workers
  • The ability to communicate verbally with clients and co-workers
  • You’ve got to be able to listen to a client, work out the real business problem, and work within your team to create a solution.

Skills that are Nice to Have

  • Mobile web and mobile app design
  • Web application design, e-commerce system design

Qualifications

  • A degree or diploma in a visual design field, or comparable experience.
  • 2-5 years experience working in a professional capacity.
  • Experience dealing with clients in a one on one environment, or in a meeting/workshop situation.
